Bateman's

🏛️ House📍 Burwash

Bateman's in the East Sussex village of Burwash was the home of Rudyard Kipling for the last thirty years of his life, and it survives today almost exactly as he knew it. The Jacobean stone house sits in a secluded valley garden, and inside you will find his study preserved just as he left it — the desk, the books, the Rolls-Royce in the garage — as if he has only just stepped out. For readers of The Jungle Book, Kim, or If—, it is a genuinely moving pilgrimage.

Best for literary pilgrims and those who love an intimate, storied country house.
