Derwent Island House
Derwent Island House stands alone on a seven-acre island in Derwentwater, near Keswick. Joseph Pocklington built the original house in 1778, and Anthony Salvin later added wings and a tower to give it its Italianate look. Still lived in and let as a private home, it opens to visitors on only a few days each year, reached by boat across the lake.
- private wooded island
- Italianate architecture
- rare boat-access open days
Best for a once-a-year island house visit booked well ahead.
