Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate
Dunstable Downs and the Whipsnade Estate take in the highest ground in the Chilterns, a great swell of chalk grassland on the escarpment above the Bedfordshire plain. The slopes draw kite flyers and gliders riding the updraughts, and red kites wheel overhead. Rich in wildflowers and butterflies, the downs offer huge open views, with a visitor centre and miles of paths linking the wider Whipsnade estate.
