Hardknott Roman Fort
Hardknott Roman Fort commands a remote shoulder of the Hardknott Pass, built in the 2nd century to watch the road from the coast to Ambleside. The outline of its walls, gateways, headquarters and a separate bathhouse survives in one of the most spectacular settings of any Roman site in Britain. There is no charge and no barrier — just open ruins ringed by some of the highest Lakeland fells.
