Houghton Mill and Waterclose Meadows
Houghton Mill is a tall timber-and-brick watermill standing on an island in the Great Ouse, with milling recorded on the site as far back as the tenth century. The current building dates from the seventeenth century, and on demonstration days the great waterwheel still drives the stones to grind flour. Around it spread the Waterclose Meadows, a stretch of lush riverside grazing laced with footpaths and dragonflies.
