Orford Ness
Orford Ness is a vast shingle spit off the Suffolk coast, the largest in Europe, and one of the most hauntingly strange places in National Trust care. For much of the twentieth century it was used by the Ministry of Defence for secret military research, and the eerie ruins of pagoda-like buildings and military structures still litter the landscape. The wildlife — breeding seabirds, rare plants clinging to the shingle — contrasts magnificently with the industrial desolation.

- Abandoned Cold War military research site
- Rare shingle and coastal wildlife
Best for those drawn to wild landscapes, Cold War history, and atmospheric solitude.
