Sharow Cross
Sharow Cross is a weathered limestone stump that marks the edge of medieval Ripon's sanctuary zone. It is the sole survivor of eight 13th-century crosses, each placed a mile from the minster, where a fugitive who touched the stone could claim the church's protection. Little of the original cross remains, but as a rare relic of England's lost sanctuary laws it carries far more history than its modest size suggests.
